Course Objective
The Stick (SMAW) welding training program is designed for individuals seeking to learn or strengthen fundamental welding skills commonly used in construction, fabrication, and maintenance environments.
By the end of this program, participants will:
- Demonstrate improved SMAW welding techniques
- Understand proper equipment setup and safe operation
- Practice welding in multiple positions and joint configurations
- Gain awareness of how SMAW welder qualification testing is conducted
This program focuses on skills training and preparation. Welder qualification testing is conducted separately and in accordance with applicable standards.

- SMAW (Stick) welding fundamentals
- Welding machine setup and operation
- Safety practices and equipment handling
- Electrode selection, storage, and preparation
- Welding techniques: flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead
- Fillet and groove welds
- Welding positions and procedures
- Weld defects and basic quality control
- Introduction to blueprint reading and welding symbols
- Practical SMAW welding exercises
Evaluation Methods
Candidate progress is evaluated through practical, hands-on welding activities completed during training.
This training program:
- Does not include CWB certification exams
- Does not include theoretical or written CWB exams
- May include internal skill assessments for training purposes only
Any training completion document issued by TopWeld is not a CWB certification or qualification.
Course Duration
Training programs typically range from 20 to 39 hours, depending on the selected schedule and training pathway.

Important Information for Candidates
- The Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) does not certify individual welders
- Welders are qualified, not certified
- Welder qualification testing is practical only; there are no written or theoretical exams
- Welder qualifications are:
- Employer-dependent
- Valid only while employed by a CWB-certified company
- Limited by welding process, position, material group, thickness, and applicable WPS/WPDS
- Training programs are not accredited, or certified by the CWB
