Understanding the Role of the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB)
The Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) is a certification body that certifies companies, not individual welders. CWB certification applies to organizations that demonstrate compliance with applicable welding standards, quality management systems, and procedural requirements.
Individual welders are qualified, not certified. Welder qualification testing evaluates a welder’s ability to perform a specific welding process under defined conditions.
Eligibility for Welder Qualification Testing
Welder qualification testing is conducted for individuals who require qualification for employment under a CWB-certified company.
Key points candidates must understand:
- Individuals do not apply directly to the CWB for certification
- Welder qualification testing is arranged through employers or accredited test centres
- Qualification is valid only while working for a CWB-certified company
Top Weld assists candidates in understanding these requirements before testing.
Welder qualification testing Process
Welder qualification testing:
- Is practical only
- Does not include written or theoretical exams
- Is witnessed by a CWB representative
- Evaluates welding performance against applicable standards
Testing scope is limited by:
- Welding process
- Welding position
- Material group
- Thickness
- Applicable WPS / WPDS
There is no CWB certification exam for individual welders.
CWB Certification Applies to Companies
CWB certification demonstrates that a company:
- Maintains qualified personnel
- Follows approved welding procedures
- Meets quality and safety requirements
For welders:
- Qualification is employer-dependent
- Qualification is not transferable between companies
- Qualification expires if employment under a CWB-certified company ends
Final Application Steps
