Course Objective
The MIG (GMAW) welding training program is designed for individuals seeking to develop practical welding skills used in fabrication, manufacturing, and construction environments.
By the end of this program, participants will:
- Demonstrate improved MIG welding techniques
- Understand equipment setup and safe operation
- Practice welding in specific positions and applications
- Gain awareness of how MIG welder qualification testing is conducted
This course focuses on skills training and preparation. Welder qualification testing is conducted separately and under applicable standards.

- Health and safety practices for welding and cutting
- Safe operation of welding and cutting equipment
- MIG (GMAW) process fundamentals
- Welding machine setup and adjustment
- Shielding gases and their applications
- Filler wire selection
- Common weld faults and corrective techniques
- Practical MIG (GMAW) welding techniques
Evaluation Methods
Candidate performance is evaluated through practical, hands-on welding activities conducted during training.
This training program:
- Does not include CWB certification exams
- Does not include theoretical or written CWB exams
- May include internal skill assessments for training purposes only
Any internal training completion document issued by TopWeld is not a CWB certification or qualification.
Course Duration
Training programs typically range from 20 to 39 hours, depending on the selected schedule and training pathway.

- The Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) does not certify individual welders
- Welders are qualified, not certified
- Welder qualification testing is practical only; there are no written or theoretical exams
- Welder qualifications are:
- Employer-dependent
- Valid only while employed by a CWB-certified company
- Limited by welding process, position, material group, thickness, and applicable WPS/WPDS
- Training programs are not accredited, or certified by the CWB
